Aww sweet summertime. That time when you’re really excited for the first two weeks, you’ve been waiting not so patiently for the last 6 weeks for it start, and then you inevitably start counting down the days until your kids go back to school and you can have a moment of peace. Whether you spend your summers vacationing at grandma’s or you spend lazy days at the lake, there is always opportunity to create beautiful memories. And those are the moments I want to cherish forever.
It’s no secret that I photograph my children on the daily. I’m smack dab in the middle of a 365 project and shooting daily just comes naturally now. And summer is no exception. I love the warm nights with the kids drawing with chalk on the sidewalk, the late start mornings with the kids cuddling on the couch laughing at cartoons, and the afternoons spent at our local lake. There are so many memories to capture, so many opportunities to freeze time for just a moment in a photograph that you can look back on remember the way they sounded when they squealed running through the sprinkler, or the joy on their face while sharing a Popsicle with your friendly basset hound.
Water is obviously a huge component in summer, from lakes, to sprinklers, to your own kiddie pool in the back yard. I love photographing water. I love the way the light shimmers through it, I love the way it’s frozen in a photograph. Sprinkler photos can come out truly amazing with a few easy tricks. Make sure the light source is behind the sprinkler, these photographs were taken in the evening time so the sun was lower than it would be in the afternoon. I positioned myself to shoot through the sprinkler with the sun being behind the kids, and then I had them run at me. The result was magical.
I love having photos of my kids playing in their pool too! These photos are typically taken midday where the lighting is harshest but just embrace that sunshine and take the photos anyways. These have been some of my favorite photos I’ve taken of the kids!
This year they have a 4ft deep pool so I’m excited to get it set up and take more photos of them in it! The trampoline is also an amazing place to take photos of them showing their true emotions. Stay tuned for those, I only have photos of them in the winter months on the trampoline as of now.
When I think of summer, I think of food. I love food, I love cooking, I love all of the yummy seasonal flavors of summer. The ice cream, the fruits, the BBQ, give me all the things! Take photos of those things that you can only get away with eating a few months out of the year!
And all of those lazy summer days where nothing is really happening except relishing in that summer warmth? Take photos then too. Take photos so your children can look back in 20 years and remember how sweet their summers were, even on days when nothing was going on.
And don’t forget to add the grandparents in, and a few of mom and dad too. After all, you were all there too!
Get out there and take those photos, remember these sweet summer days, because before you know it they’ll be over. Use your cell phone, use your camera, whatever it takes, just freeze time for a brief second. Your kids will thank you for it later.
Cheers, to a beautiful summer.
